While the 5 Steps Academy Research Center’s research primarily focuses on the practical applications of generative models, we are also dedicated to exploring the theoretical foundations of this technology. We believe that a deep understanding of the underlying principles of generative learning is essential to driving innovation and progress in the field.

Our researchers work to develop new theoretical models of generative learning, exploring topics such as deep learning and reinforcement learning. We also investigate how these models can be used in novel ways to generate content that is both realistic and creative.

We develop practical applications of generative models through our Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) and other software tools. By applying our theoretical research to real-world problems, we are able to test our ideas in a practical setting and refine our models based on the feedback we receive from users.

Our research in generative models focuses on the following key areas:

  1. Generative Models for Reinforcement Learning: Generative models can be used to generate simulated data for training reinforcement learning agents
  2. GANs: Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) are a type of generative model that involves training two neural networks, a generator and a discriminator, to generate new data that is similar to the training data.
  3. Meta-Learning: Meta-learning involves training a neural network to learn how to learn. We are exploring the use of meta-learning for generative models to enable them to quickly adapt to new data distributions and generate high-quality data with limited training data.
  4. Multi-modal Generation: Multi-modal generation involves generating data that includes multiple modalities, such as generating an image conditioned on text and sound.
  5. Energy-Based Models: Energy-based models are a type of generative model that involve defining an energy function over the data, and then sampling from the distribution that minimizes the energy.
  6. Few-Shot Learning: Few-shot learning involves training a generative model on a few examples of a new class, and then generating new data for that class.
  7. Unsupervised Learning: Unsupervised learning involves training generative models on unlabeled data, without any explicit supervision or labels. We are exploring new techniques and architectures for unsupervised learning, which has potential applications in areas such as anomaly detection, data compression, and data augmentation.
  8. Continual Learning: Continual learning involves training generative models on a continuous stream of data, where new data is received over time and the model needs to adapt and learn from the new data while retaining its knowledge of the previous data
  9. Interactive Generation: Interactive generation involves enabling users to interact with generative models to create customized and personalized outputs, such as creating personalized avatars or generating customized fashion designs
  10. Attention Mechanisms: Attention mechanisms involve enabling generative models to focus on specific parts of the input or output, such as generating an image with attention to specific objects or generating a sentence with attention to specific words.
  11. Inverse Problems: Inverse problems involve generating a solution to a problem from incomplete or noisy data, such as generating a 3D model from a single 2D image or generating a clean image from a noisy one. We are exploring new techniques and architectures for solving inverse problems with generative models, which has potential applications in areas such as medical imaging, video processing, and signal processing.
  12. Self-Supervised Learning: Self-supervised learning involves training generative models on pretext tasks, where the model generates an output that can be used to predict a known property of the input. For example, a generative model could be trained to generate a color image from a grayscale image, and the color image could be used to predict the original color image. We are exploring new techniques and architectures for self-supervised learning, which has potential applications in areas such as computer vision and natural language processing.
  13. Non-Parametric Generative Models: Non-parametric generative models involve designing generative models that do not rely on a fixed number of parameters, allowing the model to adapt to the complexity of the data.
  14. Generative Models for Human-AI Collaboration: Generative models can be used to generate synthetic data to help humans better understand and collaborate with AI systems, and to generate explanations for AI decisions.
  15. Generative Models for Personalized Content Creation: Generative models can be used to generate personalized content, such as learning recommendations, personalized articles, and personalized assessment materials.
